Soon, 'War' would become an institution unto itself as more discriminating and
angry gods were solicited to justify the cause of increased violence. But we were
talking about sports, not religion or war…right?
Sport returns to humanity that by which instinct has refined- through engaging the worthy adversary-
absent the perversions of war. Sport keeps permeable the default boundaries so soon to rise if
heeding only the call of primitive territorial instincts.
Before land bequeathed by God...
Before automation and
Before indiscriminate and impersonal weaponry...
There was war and it was sport.
Nomadic peoples divided along tribal lines skirmished largely for the sake of honing the instincts
mandatory for survival. Casualties were typically visited upon the 'vulnerable' and/or the 'unlucky'. It
was the tariff exacted by evolution and it was nothing-personal brutality
Then came crops, farmers, builders, and manufacture of rudimentary durable goods.
Sport and war began to diverge at this point as war was forced to adopt higher cause for
the purpose of defending that which could now be 'taken' or 'lost' as opposed to
If limited only to that which could be stated as 'substantiated speculation' most would agree that
organized sport represents a significant component in most, if not all, societies.
Sporting competition holds appeal as a shared connection in the moment. It is also a representation of
developments sequenced backward in explanation of the moment and an extension to the possibilities
of a future. Regardless, to all other circumstances, 'good fortune' will be the pleasure experienced by
somebody(s) if only for a moment.
Throughout human history, competition within the bounds of ‘fair play’ has always represented much
more then just ‘fun and games’. If it is true- as it so seems to be- that all that can be seen and sensed
shares common lineage, then sports viewed as a whole becomes a reflection of greater world and the
nature of life in the universe.
Sport at once represents the way things are in the heat of competition as it connects to the way things
'should be' through the many ways it 'already is'.
As war seeks to gain destructive advantage through proprietary technology, sport assures that all
participants have equal access to all applied innovations.
At the point of divergence, it was 'sport' dispatching baggage through dropping the
turd that would morph to 'War' Sport was now on its own- as it pertained to the
discovery of outcome- within the bounds of the 'Playing Field'.
The precise point at which Sport and War began to diverge is difficult to determine. The point
at which the two emancipated from one another is a little more clear (although many traces of
shared lineage remain fairly evident). This 'parting' was also fairly recent...
The 'break' occurred at the point the sanctioned violence of War degenerated to
the inclusion of non-combatants as recipients of the intended violence. The
'spectator' then became the non-consenting participant- without sufficient means to
compete- but, with no-less investment in the outcome.
